Alabama basketball will face Florida in SEC Tournament quarterfinals

It’ll be a rubber match for Alabama men’s basketball in its first game of the SEC tournament. The Crimson Tide will face Florida on Friday, after the Gators beat Georgia 85-80 in the second round of the event.

The Gators are the No. 6 seed in the tournament. They earned a double-bye before facing the Bulldogs, who beat Missouri on Wednesday in the first-round game.

Alabama beat Florida in the first matchup of the season, at Coleman Coliseum in February. The Gators took the Tide to overtime, but Nate Oats’ team pulled out a 98-93 victory.

When they met again in Gainesville, it was a different story. With Latrell Wrightsell Jr. out with a head injury, the Tide’s offense had begun sputtering, an issue towards the end of the regular season for UA.

Florida was able to take advantage of Alabama’s weak defense, putting up 105 points, while keeping the Crimson Tide to 87. That game was the second of back-to-back UA losses, following the second Tennessee defeat.

“I just felt like their physicality, their defensive intensity, our offensive struggles led to us not playing like we needed on the defensive end, which was keeping us in the game while our offense was struggling, and then it got opened up,” Oats said after the loss.

The Gators enter the game 22-10 on the season, 12-7 in SEC play. The game against Georgia was close to the end, with UF prevailing despite missing 18 free throws.

Alabama rebounded from the Florida loss with a win over Arkansas to close out the regular season, which clinched a double-bye. The winner of Friday’s game will advance to the SEC tournament semifinals on Saturday, against either Kentucky or Texas A&M.

The Friday game is the second of the late block at Bridgestone Arena. It will likely tip off around 8:30 p.m. CT, and will be aired on the SEC Network.
