Irv Smith Jr. to join defending Super Bowl champs

Tight end Irv Smith Jr. will seek to revive his career with the Kansas City Chiefs in 2024.

Set to become a free agent at 3 p.m. CDT Wednesday after one season with the Cincinnati Bengals, Smith will sign a one-year contract with the two-time defending Super Bowl champions, The Associated Press and NFL Network reported.

After four seasons with the Minnesota Vikings, the former Alabama standout signed as a free agent with the Cincinnati Bengals last offseason. Smith had 18 receptions for 115 yards and one touchdown in 12 games, with six starts, in 2023.

Kansas City has two tight ends under contract for 2024 – four-time All-Pro Travis Kelce, who had 93 receptions for 984 yards and five touchdowns in the 2023 regular season, and Noah Gray, who had 28 receptions for 305 yards and two touchdowns.

Smith’s contract has been reported as a $1.292 million deal with a $384,000 signing bonus, which is the guaranteed portion.

Smith joined Minnesota in the second round of the 2019 NFL Draft and caught 66 passes for 676 yards and seven touchdowns in his first two seasons while forming a tight-end tandem with Kyle Rudolph.

In 2021, a torn meniscus caused Smith to miss the entire season.

In 2022, Smith sustained an ankle injury in a 34-26 victory over the Arizona Cardinals on Oct. 30 and missed the next nine games. Smith returned for the regular-season finale, then played in the Vikings’ 31-24 loss to the New York Giants in the first round of the postseason.

In 49 regular-season games, Smith has 109 receptions for 973 yards and 10 touchdowns. He has four receptions for 42 yards and one touchdown in three postseason games.
