Shelby Lynne working on new album with Karen Fairchild of Little Big Town
Grammy-winning Alabama singer-songwriter Shelby Lynne has a new record deal, Billboard reports, and a new manager who’s known for her own musical talent: Karen Fairchild of Little Big Town.
Lynne, who grew up in southwest Alabama and went to high school in Mobile County, won a Grammy for Best New Artist in 2001. She’d released a series of country albums prior to that, but “I Am Shelby Lynne” represented a transformative shift to soul-drenched pop. Her new label, Monument Records, will reissue the album April 5 to celebrate the 25th anniversary of its 1999 release, according to a new report at Billboard.com.
According to Billboard, Lynne moved back to Nashville several years ago after a couple of decades in California. (In her “Dirt and Fiction” blog, she posted on Jan. 7 that “It has been a long 25 years since I’ve seen frost on my car windows” and that the sight made her reminisce about childhood mornings in Frankville, Ala.)
She’s working on a new album with Fairchild and singer-songwriter Ashley Monroe. Billboard quoted a statement from Lynne: “It’s good to be back in Nashville. Being back in this city has lit me up. I’ve come full circle and I can’t wait to share what we’ve been working on.”
Fairchild was born in Indiana but has Alabama connections of her own: She and Little Big Town’s Kimberly Schlapman became friends after meeting at Samford University. Band member Jimi Westbrook, Fairchild’s husband, is from Sumiton.
“It feels important to reintroduce Shelby Lynne’s genius to a fresh wave of artists and fans,” said Fairchild. “I’m blown away by her profound knowledge of music and the enormity of her talent. Shelby’s uniqueness lies in her extraordinary capacity to delve into human pain and beauty through her powerful voice and storytelling.”
