Controversial comedian Matt Rife’s ‘ProbleMATTic’ tour returning to Alabama

More than 25 of Matt Rife’s upcoming shows in North America have already sold out. This includes theaters and auditoriums in U.S. markets such as Chicago, New Orleans, Phoenix, Seattle, Philadelphia, Pittsburgh, Boston, Oakland and Washington.

Today, a new show was announced for Huntsville’s Orion Amphitheater, an 8,000-capacity venue that typically hosts concerts by the likes of Stevie Nicks, Phish and Snoop Dogg. The June 14 performance at Orion is the only upcoming Alabama date on Rife’s “PrombleMATTic World Tour.” (Rife’s two October shows at Birmingham’s BJCC Concert Hall sold-out quickly.)

Tickets for Rife’s 7:30 p.m. Huntsville show run $60 to $125 (plus applicable fees) and go on sale 10 a.m. March 15 via axs.com and the Orion Box Office, address 701 Amphitheater Drive N.W.

As the tour name suggest, Rife, like his comedic hero Dave Chappelle, fully embraces the controversy his style of comedy attracts. (Last year, he performed at storied New York arena Madison Square Garden as part of Chappelle’s 50th birthday celebration.)

Rife’s standup special “Natural Selection” was a hit on Netflix upon its late 2023 release, even though it opened with a bit about domestic violence and included a sequence joking about intellectually disabled children.

It’s hard to feel great about making fun of either of those subjects. Which is made all the more frustrating because Rife clearly is talented. His “Natural Selection” material contains its share of effective bits, including a riff on hippie gals way too into crystals.

As ticket sales for Rife’s current tour suggest, his irreverent style has found a massive audience, even in the cancel-culture era.

On TikTok, Rife has more than 18 million followers. His posts on that short-video-based, youth-dominating social media platform have been liked nearly 400 million times. Rife’s two pre-Netflix comedy specials, self-released on YouTube, have garnered nearly 35 million views total.

An Ohio native, Rife has been in the entertainment biz for a while now, even though he’s only 28 years old. Earlier in his career, he appeared on a few different MTV shows, including “Wild ‘n Out” and “Total Request Live.” Later, he appeared on network sitcoms “Brooklyn Nine-Nine” and “Fresh Off The Boat.” He’s been a paranormal investigator on YouTube, too.

With his boy-band visage and chiseled physique, Rife is also somewhat of a contemporary sex symbol. His fanbase includes more than its share of females. And in the past, Rife dated Kate Beckinsale, the British actor/bombshell who’s 22 years his senior. More recently, he’s been linked to 25-year-old actor Jessica Lord.
