Aldi plans to open 800 new stores in the US

Discount grocery Aldi plans to open 800 new stores around the county in the coming years, the company announced.

The German supermarket chain has a five-year, $9 billion expansion plan that “will bring even more communities great products at the lowest possible prices during a time when consumers are more focused than ever on saving money,” the grocer announced in a press release. The expansion, expected to be complete by 2028, will include both new locations and store conversions.

“Our growth is fueled by our customers, and they are asking for more Aldi stores in their neighborhoods nationwide,” Jason Hart, CEO, Aldi, said in a statement. “With this commitment to add 800 stores in the next five years, we’ll be where our shoppers need us while positively impacting the communities we serve.”

Aldi also announced the successful completion of its acquisition of Winn-Dixie and Harveys grocery stores, a merger the grocer says, “which will drive significant growth in the Southeast region over the next few years.”

In 2023, Aldi said the business deal would add more than 400 locations to the company’s roster.

CNN reports approximately 50 stores will be converted later this year, with a majority of those reopening under the Aldi name in 2025. The Winn-Dixie and Harveys Supermarkets names won’t completely disappear: Aldi says a “meaningful amount” of locations will retain that branding.
