Tennessee Titans close the door on Derrick Henry’s return

Tennessee Titans general manager Ran Carthon said, “The door’s never closed,” when asked in January about the possibility of running back Derrick Henry returning to the NFL team for the 2024 season.

Well, now it is.

On Monday, the Titans reached an agreement with Dallas Cowboys running back Tony Pollard to join the team when his current contract expires on Wednesday for a three-year, $24 million deal. Pollard has been a 1,000-yard rusher in each of the past two seasons.

With running back Tyjae Spears preparing for his second NFL season with Tennessee, the addition of Pollard would appear to leave Henry out of the Titans’ plans.

Henry completed a four-year, $50 million contract with Tennessee in 2023, when he led the Titans in rushing for the seventh straight season. That includes the 2021 campaign, when Henry missed nine games because of a broken foot.

Henry will come up 507 rushing yards short of the franchise record of 10,009 established by Eddie George from 1996 through 2003.

Henry will become an unrestricted free agent able to sign with any NFL team at 3 p.m. CDT Wednesday.

Henry joined the Titans in the second round of the 2016 NFL Draft after winning the Heisman Trophy with Alabama’s 2015 CFP national-championship team.

In 119 regular-season games with Tennessee, Henry ran for 9,502 yards and a franchise-record 90 touchdowns on 2,030 carries, caught 155 passes for 1,458 yards and three touchdowns and completed 7-of-9 passes for 37 yards with four touchdowns and no interceptions.

In seven playoff games, Henry ran for 732 yards and four touchdowns on 156 carries, caught 13 passes for 88 yards and completed his only pass for a touchdown.
