Body recovered after vehicle drives off Dauphin Island Parkway into river

Rescue crews recovered a body from a submerged vehicle which drove off the end of Dauphin Island Parkway into a river Sunday night.

Mobile Fire-Rescue responded to a report of a vehicle in the water about 9:30 p.m. Sunday. When they arrived, a security guard working in the area said he had seen the vehicle go off the end of the roadway at a high rate of speed and into the Middle Fork Deer River.

The vehicle reportedly floated to the west for a short while before sinking.

MFRD rescue units used sonar to conduct a search and were joined by Mobile Police Department’s Marine Detail and Underwater Search and Recovery Team.

Their efforts located the submerged vehicle, with one deceased occupant still inside.

The victim’s identity is being withheld pending notification of next of kin.
