Spring sports roundup: Jag Classic draws top teams to Hoover
With spring break breaking out all around and softball season in full swing, dozens of teams took part in this Saturday’s Jag Classic in Hoover. Here are some game results – as reported to [email protected] – from that event.
Helena 2, Curry 0
The Huskies beat Curry and Hatton and lost to West Limestone on Saturday to run their record to 18-3 on the season.
In the win over Curry, Helena got a run in the first and another in the third as Hayden Traywick pitched a 5-inning shutout, allowing 2 hits and striking out 3.
Hannah Steele went 1-for-2 with an RBI to lead Jasper at the plate. Presley Lively was 1-for-3 with a run scored. Cammi Pugh was 0-for-1 with a walk and a run scored.
Helena blanked Hatton 6-0, scoring single runs in the first, second and fifth innings with 3 runs in the third.
Lead-off hitter Lively went 2-for-2 with a triple and a pair of runs scored. Gracie Storey doubled in 2 at-bats with an RBI and a run scored while Steele went 2-for-3 with a home run and 2 RBIs. Emma Olive also had a homer and Addison Draiss went 2-for-3.
Harley Morrison earned the win for Helena, allowing a hit and striking out 1 over 3 innings. Jaida Holtzclaw gave up 3 hits and struck out 2 in 2 innings.
West Limestone scored single runs in the second and third innings and finished with 2 hits and took advantage of a pair of Helena errors.
Lively, Draiss, Steele and Pugh had hits in the loss, with Draiss punching out a double.
Carrington Schiefer was saddled with the loss, throwing 1 inning in relief of Traywick and allowing an unearned run. Schiefer allowed a run on 1 hit. Marlee Parsons also gave up an unearned run on no hits with 2 walks and a strikeout.
Jasper 6, Brewbaker Tech 0
The Vikings went 2-1 in the Spain Park Jag Classic on Saturday, beating Brew Tech with Lilly Banks earning the win on the mound. She also helped her cause at the plate with a double.
Missy Odom also had a double in the win.
Jasper beat Alexandria 4-1 with Isabella smacking a 2-run home run. Winning pitcher Odom also had a double. Idaysia Mercer had a pair of hits for the Vikings.
Hewitt-Trussville beat Jasper 7-3 in the tournament. Odom contributed a 2-run homer.
Moody 14, Homewood 6
The Blue Devils pounded out 10 hits, including a home run, triple and three doubles, in the win over Homewood in the Jag Classic at Spain Park.
Taylor Rogers had the home run and a double for Moody while going 3-for-3 with 3 runs scored and 4 RBIs. Lacey Nichols went 2-for-4 with a triple and a pair of RBIs. Emma Kile went 1-for-3 with a double and 2 RBIs and Libby Higgins was 1-for-2 with a double and 2 RBIs.
Ryleigh Hodges earned the win in 1.1 innings of relief. She allowed 5 earned runs on 3 hits with a strikeout and a walk.
Peighton Letson led Homewood at the plate, going 3-for-3 with a homer and 4 RBIs. Lauren Smith was 2-for-2 for the Patriots and Mia Gonzalez went 1-for-2 with an RBI.
Talley Hatcher gave up 7 earned runs over 3.1 innings with 2 strikeouts and 6 walks. Anne Howell allowed 7 runs – 6 earned – with 5 walks and 3 hits in 1.2 innings.
Homewood 7, St. Clair County 6
The Patriots rallied for 6 runs in the bottom of the fourth – and final – inning to earn the win on Saturday in the Jag Classic at Spain Park.
Winning pitcher Mia Gonzalez homered and Lauren Smith had a double for Homewood. Gonzalez was 2-for-2 with 2 runs scored and an RBI in the win. She gave up 6 earned runs in 4 innings on 9 hits with 2 strikeouts and 3 walks.
Madison Letson, Ava Robinson, Allie Stuman, Peighton Letson, Abigail Box and Kloeanne Smith also had hits for Homewood.
Oaklie Rewis took the loss for St. Clair County, allowing 7 earned runs on 9 hits with a pair of strikeouts and a walk.
Aniyah Dean tripled while going 2-for-3 with 2 RBIs and Tessa Parvin and Emma Porterfield had doubles in the loss. Carleigh Butts and Brooklynn Sertell were both 1-for-1 with 2 runs scored.
Randolph County 6, Homewood 0
Three Randolph County pitchers combined to no-hit Homewood in the win on Saturday in the Jag Classic at Spain Park. Alexius Key worked 2 innings with a walk, Hannah Parmer walked 2 in an inning and Lexi Key struck out 2 with 4 walks for the Tigers.
Brantlee Wortham went 2-for-2 with a homer, 2 runs scored and 2 RBIs and Lizzie Milam had a triple for the winners. Kinsley Weathers was 1-for-2 with 2 runs scored and Talee Sims went 1-for-3 with an RBI. Aniyah Lee also had an RBI.
Grace Pilgrim took the loss for Homewood, allowing 6 runs – 4 earned – on 8 hits with 3 walks and a strikeout.
Chelsea 9, East Lawrence 4
The Hornets beat East Lawrence and tied Curry and Alexandria in games on Saturday.
Katie Hopson was 3-for-4 with 3 runs scored and a pair of stolen bases in the win over East Lawrence. Baylor McCluney was 2-for-2 with 2 runs and an RBI. Sydney Carroll homered while going 2-for-3 with 4 RBIs. Madeline Epperson was 1-for-2 with a homer and RBI.
Claire Purkey got the win in relief, pitching 2 innings and giving up a hit with 1 strikeout.
In a 3-3 tie with Curry, Caroline Brown was 1-for-2 with a double and a run scored. Emma Parmley was 1-for-2 with an RBI. Alaysha Crews gave up 2 earned runs on 4 hits with 4 strikeouts in 5 innings.
The Hornets tied Alexandria 4-4. Carroll was 3-for-3 with a home run, double and 3 RBIs. She also gave up 2 earned runs on 4 hits in 5 innings. Epperson was 1-for-2 with a homer and an RBI.
Saraland 4, Moody 2
The Spartans jumped to a 4-0 lead before Moody scored a pair in the fifth – and final – inning on Saturday in Saturday’s tournament at the Hoover Met.
Myleigh Dobbins earned the win for Saraland, allowing 2 earned runs on 5 hits with 8 strikeouts.
Kori Simmons and Olivia Ray doubled for the winners. Ashlynn Hayes, Madison Croley and Landra Collins had hits for the Spartans.
Kendall Trimm homered and was 2-for-3 with a pair of RBIs for Moody. Ryleigh Hodges, Lacey Nichols and Emma Kile also had hits.
Hodges took the loss, allowing an unearned run on 2 hits in 2 innings. She struck out 1 and walked 1. Bella Turley gave up 3 unearned runs on 3 hits in 3 innings with a pair of strikeouts.
The Spartans also edged Alexandria 7-6 on Saturday. Saraland led 7-5 headed into the bottom of the fifth inning.
Gracie Dees earned the win, giving up 6 runs – 5 earned – on 11 hits in 5 innings. She struck out 1 and walked 1. She also helped her cause with a home run and 2 RBIs.
Croley and Simmons doubled for the winners. Croley had an RBI. Brelynne Hughes drove in 2 runs. Graci Skidmore was 1-for-3 with an RBI.
Charlee Parris (2-for-3) and Christian Hess (2-for-2) homered for Alexandria with Hess driving in a pair of runs and Parris getting an RBI. Kaden Prichett was 2-for-3.
Pressley Slaton took the loss, giving up 7 runs – 5 earned – on 6 hits. She struck out 4 and walked 2.
Saraland also topped Hartselle 10-3 with Myleigh Dobbins, Skidmore and Hughes all hitting home runs. Dobbins was the winner on the mound, giving up 3 runs on 2 hits with 2 strikeouts over 4 innings.
Bailey Lawrence took the loss for Hartselle, allowing 7 runs – 5 earned – on 5 hits with 4 strikeouts and 4 walks in 2.1 innings.
Katie Gillott and Brooklyn Stiles had home runs for the Tigers. Gillott drove in a pair of runs.

HUNTSVILLE/TENNESSEE VALLEY
Central-Phenix City 16-9, Sparkman 0-6
The Red Devils rolled to a 3-inning home rout of Sparkman on the way to a double-header sweep on Saturday. Nine Central players scored with five scoring a pair of runs and lead-off hitter Gerritt Griggs scored three.
Griggs went 3-for-3 at the plate and drove in 3 runs. Ally Supan went 2-for-2 with 3 RBIs, Mariah Harrison was 2-for-3 with a pair of RBIs and Kamryn Hammock was 1-for-2 with a 2 RBIs. Supan and Harrison had doubles in the win.
Kayla Storey got the win, allowing 2 hits over 3 innings.
Fiona East took the loss, allowing 14 runs – 13 earned – on 9 hits with 5 walks and 3 strikeouts in 1.2 innings.
In Game 2, Central out-hit the Senators 12-9, jumping to a 3-0 lead after the first inning and 4-1 after 3. Leading 4-2 after 4, the Devils scored a pair of runs in the fifth and matched Sparkman’s 3 sixth-inning runs with 3 in the bottom of the inning.
Supan earned the win with a complete-game 9-hitter, allowing 6 runs – 4 earned – with 5 strikeouts and 3 walks. She also gave up a home run to Brynlee Silletti, who was 3-for-3 with a pair of runs scored and an RBI.
Khloe Broadwater homered for the winners, going 2-for-3 with 3 RBIs. Bria Allen and Harrison doubled for Central.
Eden Parker took the loss, giving up 12 hits over 6 innings. She gave up 9 earned runs with 2 strikeouts and 4 walks. She was 1-for-3 at the plate with a double. Carly White drove in a pair of runs while Silletti was 3-for-3 with 2 runs scored and an RBI. Carys Enabnit and Taylor Gilreath also had an RBI in the loss.
Waterloo 4, Tharptown 0
Georgiana Kavich threw a 1-hit shutout for Waterloo on Saturday, striking out 5 Tharptown batters. She threw 42 strikes in 57 pitches.
Addie Pollard had a double for the Cougars, scored a run and drove in 2 runs. Lead-off hitter Caroline Lambert went 3-for-3 with a run scored and Claire Cooper was 1-for-3 with a run scored.
The Cougars also played Colbert Heights to a 3-3 tie on Saturday. Pollard struck out 5 and gave up 5 hits and 3 earned runs over 4 innings.
Sarah Allen was 2-for-2 with an RBI for Waterloo. Alyssa Abernathy was 1-for-2 with a run scored and Kavich also went 1-for-2.
Ardmore 9, Hayden 8
Ellie Riley smacked a walk-off 3-run home run to lift Ardmore over Hayden on Saturday. Riley went 2-for-4 at the plate for the Tigers.
Addison Mikel was 2-for-3 with a homer in the win. The Tigers also got a home run from Ragan Brownlow, who was 1-for-2.
Ardmore also lost 3-1 to Vestavia Hills with Avery Dunn throwing 6 innings, striking out 4 and allowing 3 earned runs.
Brooks beat Ardmore 6-1 in the tournament at Hoover.
Muscle Shoals 3, Sumiton Christian 2
Muscle Shoals improved to 11-2 on the season with three wins on Saturday.
Printiss Fowler had a pair of hits and 2 RBIs in the win over Sumiton Christian.
The Trojans also beat Oakman 10-1 as Leilah Mennes went 2-for-3 with a triple, 3 RBIs and 2 runs scored.
Muscle Shoals blanked Carbon Hill 11-0 as Kaitlyn Trepanier threw a 5-inning no-hitter. Mennes went 3-for-4 with a double and a pair of RBIs.
Lincoln 10, B.B. Comer 0
The Bears blanked B.B. Comer in the Talladega County Tournament on Saturday.
Cameron Pruitt went 2-for-3 at the plate with a triple for Lincoln. Paisley LaClair was 2-for-2.
Shelby Williams struck out 7 and allowed 1 hit in 5 innings. She was 2-for-3 at the plate. Aubrey Machen tripled and Chandler Stephens and Koe Korreckt had hits.
In a 5-0 win over Sylacauga, Maddie Smith went 2-for-2 with a triple and a double. Pruitt was 2-for-2 and Stephens was 1-for-2 at the plate and struck out 5, allowing no runs on the mound.
In a 6-5 win over Childersburg, LaClair struck out 7 in 3.1 innings on the mound and was 2-for-2 at the plate. Stephens was 1-for-2 and EK Hendrix was 1-for-1. Machen also had a hit.
In a 6-4 win over Fayetteville, Hendrix went 3-for-2, Machen was 2-for-3 with a triple and Korreckt and Kinsley Crow both doubled.
The Bears lost 3-2 to Munford. Stephens gave up 3 earned runs and struck out 4 in 4 innings. LaClair, Smith, Pruitt, Hendrix and Crow had hits.
MOBILE/COASTAL ALABAMA
Spanish Fort 3, Houston Academy 2
The Toros led when the game in the Terry Collins Memorial Tournament in Dothan was suspended due to lightning. Spanish Fort (10-6) was 2-1 in the tournament.
Madison Griffith, Kennedy Sevcik, Haley Hart and AT Luke had hits for the winners with Luke and Griffith driving in a run each.
Spanish Fort beat Dothan 2-1 to open the tournament. Kenzie Boullon went the distance for the Toros, striking out 4 and allowing 1 earned run on 4 hits.
Ella Grace Nobles, Griffith, Raeleigh Hocker and Ryleigh Stanford had hits in the win.
Enterprise beat Spanish Fort 11-1 in the Toros’ second game of the event. Hart, Noble and Hocker had hits in the loss.
Sevcik went 7-for-12 on the week for Spanish Fort with three doubles, a homer, 8 RBIs and 4 runs scored.
STATEWIDE
Houston Academy 1, Wicksburg 0
Houston Academy’s Braya Hodges held Wicksburg to 1 hit in a tournament game at James Oates Sports Park in Dothan. Hodges struck out 11 and walked 1 over 5 innings in the shutout.
Lead-off batter Mary Suzan Aman tripled for Houston Academy and scored the lone run. Emily Adams, Jadyn Rausch, Mallory Magrino and Maddie Jerkins were all 1-for-2 at the plate.
Ellie Cox allowed a run on 3 hits and struck out 2 in 2 innings pitched for Wicksburg. Natalie Cole gave up a hit in 3 innings with 2 strikeouts. Chloe Joyner had the Panthers’ lone hit.
Wicksburg 1, Dothan 0
In a tournament win at Dothan shortened to 4 innings due to lightning, Ellie Cox struck out 9 in 3 innings, allowing 2 hits for the winners.
Tylaya Lingo and Emalee Mathis had singles in the win.

BIRMINGHAM
Vestavia Hills 1, Hoover 0
The Class 7A third-ranked Rebels went on the road and edged No. 4 Hoover on Saturday.
Teagan McGrew scored for Vestavia Hills from an assist by Addison Mizerany.
The Rebels improved to 11-1-1 on the season while Hoover is 10-2-1.

BIRMINGHAM
Thompson 7, Hazel Green 3
The Warriors (11-5) picked up the road win over Hazel Green on Saturday as Ma’Kale Holden struck out 5 in 5 innings.
Drake McBride went 2-for-4 with a home run and 3 RBIs for Thompson. Wyatt Williams was also 2-for-4.
Also on Saturday, Thompson topped Bob Jones 10-5. Wyatt Williams homered and drove in 6 runs as he went 3-for-3. Alex Jones was 2-for-2 with a pair of RBIs.
D’Marion Terrell earned the win on the mound and went 3-for-4 at the plate.
Mountain Brook 5, Gulfport (Miss.) 3
The Spartans improved to 12-1 on the season with three wins in the Battle at the Beach in Biloxi, Miss., over the weekend, including the 5-3 win over Gulfport on Saturday.
Starter John Robicheaux earned the win, allowing an unearned run with 2 strikeouts and a walk in 2 innings. Sellers Neuendorf allowed an earned run in 2 innings with 4 strikeouts, as did Caleb Barnett.
Drew Bodnar doubled in his only at-bat, Hunter Keller singled and scored a run as did Robicheaux.
The Spartans also beat St. Martin of Ocean Springs, Miss., 4-1 and Booker T. Washington of Pensacola, Fla., 8-0.
SOCCER
Oak Mountain 10, Lowndes (Ga.) 0
The top-ranked Class 7A Eagles went 2-0-1 in the Tournament of Champions at Jekyll Island, Ga., over the weekend, capping the tournament with the shutout of Lowndes of Valdosta, Ga., on Saturday. Oak Mountain improved to 12-0-1 on the year.
Julian Harrison registered a hat trick and had an assist in the rout. Gabe Capocci and Gerardo Rodriguez had 2 goals each. Rodriguez also had a pair of assists. Om Shrestha, Nate Joiner and Aiden Riley all had a goal and an assist.
Owen Wells picked up his second shutout of the tournament.
On Friday, Oak Mountain blanked St. Pius X of Atlanta 5-0.
Joiner had a pair of goals and an assist for the Eagles. Riley also had 2 goals and an assist. Alex Taylor scored a goal.
The Eagles tied Oconee County of Watkinsville, Ga., 1-1 to open the tournament on Thursday. Rodriguez scored Oak Mountain’s goal.
Mountain Brook 4, Hewitt-Trussville 0
The top-ranked Class 6A Spartans blanked 7A Hewitt-Trussville on the road on Saturday to improve to 15-0 on the season.
Hurley Smith scored 3 goals to push his season total to 12 and contributed an assist for Mountain Brook. Davis Smith also scored a goal and John Montgomery had an assist.
Mountain Brook plays at Tarrant on Tuesday at 4:30 p.m.
