NWS to see if tornado touched down in Alabama Saturday

Did a tornado touch down in southeast Alabama early Saturday?

The National Weather Service plans to find out today.

The weather service office in Tallahassee, Fla., which monitors the weather for five southeast Alabama counties, said it planned to conduct a storm damage survey on Sunday in Dale and Henry counties.

The weather service said meteorologists will be looking at “likely tornado damage.”

Both of those counties were put under tornado warnings starting just after 1:30 a.m. Saturday as storms rolled across south Alabama.

Here’s the first warning issued early Saturday:

The weather service said that preliminary results from the storm survey will be available later this afternoon or evening.

The weather service will send meteorologists to the affected areas, and they will look at the damage and determine if it was caused by a tornado or straight-line winds. If a tornado is confirmed then it will be given a preliminary rating using the Enhanced Fujita scale, which ranges from EF-0 (weak) to EF-5.
