Daniel Thomas doesn’t make it to NFL free agency

Scratch one name from the 41 players from Alabama high schools and colleges who are scheduled to become unrestricted free agents in the NFL at 3 p.m. CDT Wednesday.

On Friday, the Jacksonville Jaguars announced they had signed safety Daniel Thomas to a contract extension. The former Auburn standout had been on course to become a free agent on Wednesday, when the four-year, $3.612 million contract he signed after being selected in the fifth round of the 2020 NFL Draft expires.

Thomas has handled a primarily special-teams role with Jacksonville. In his first two seasons, Thomas was on the field for 365 defensive snaps and 422 special-teams plays. In the past two seasons, Thomas had 46 defensive snaps and 480 special-teams plays.

Thomas missed the Jaguars’ final two games of the 2023 season after he broke his left forearm in a 30-12 loss to the Tampa Bay Buccaneers on Dec. 24.

Thomas made seven solo tackles on special teams in 2023. In the voting for the 2023 AP All-Pro team, Thomas received one first-team vote at the special-teamer position.

Thomas has played in 56 regular-season and two playoff games. During his rookie season, Thomas blocked a punt by the Los Angeles Chargers’ Ty Long, then recovered the loose football and returned it 16 yards for a touchdown on Oct. 25, 2020.

Terms of Thomas’ contract were not announced.

Before Auburn and the NFL, Thomas was a prep standout at Lee-Montgomery (now named Percy Julian).
