A bicycle that runs on railroad tracks? That’s just the way the town of Blue Ridge, Ga., rolls. And you’re going to want to roll with it.

As soon as our calendars flip over to March, we can’t help but think of all the great outdoor activities we’ve been missing during winter months and now there’s a new one called railbiking.

A railbike is a two- or four-person, pedal-operated vehicle whose rubber tires are made to fit on rails of a train track. The railbikes you can rent in Blue Ridge, operated by Patriot Rail, are four-seaters and, because the route is hilly, there’s a motor to assist when your pedal power runs low.

Be sure to book before your arrival in Blue Ridge, says Katie Chimelewski Roller, Director of Public Affairs for Patriot Rail. “Patriot Rail’s Blue Ridge Scenic Railway offers a railbike excursion that is fun for all ages,” Roller said. “The custom-built, four-person electric railbikes are a unique way to explore the streams, vineyards, and Georgia pines from the rails.”

The Blue Ridge Scenic Railway website says: “Halfway through your trip, your friendly guide will pause the tour to allow you to snap some photos of the local flora and fauna.”

The trip takes about 90 minutes and costs $59.99 for adults and $49.99 for kids ages 4-12. The cost is per person, not per bike. Buy tickets here. No one under age four or 48 inches tall are allowed to ride. Closed-toe shoes required.

The website advises riders bring:

  1. Weather appropriate clothing
  2. Camera
  3. Water or other refreshments (no alcohol)
  4. Sunscreen
  5. Light jacket or poncho

The railbikes operate March through Nov. 26 so you can also enjoy the leaf-changing season in fall. Be sure to read the full guide before going at brscenic.com.
