Man kills ex-wife weeks after divorce and then shoots himself, Dothan police say

A man and a woman who died in a murder-suicide at a Dothan home have been identified as a couple who divorced less than two months ago.

Dothan police identified the fatal shooting victim as Reinetta Ann Lewis. She was 62.

Police said her ex-husband, 67-year-old Ansel Lewis, killed his ex-wife and then took his own life.

Reinetta Lewis on Feb. 28 had successfully filed for a protection from abuse order against Ansel Lewis.

Police Lt. Scott Owens said officers were dispatched just before noon Wednesday to a report of someone shot in the 900 block of East Bunche Street.

When they arrived, they found Reinetta Lewis in the front yard. She had been shot multiple times and was pronounced dead on the scene.

Owens said they received reports that the suspect had gone either into the residence, or around the back. Multiple attempts to contact him by phone and loudspeaker were unsuccessful.

After about an hour, the Special Response Team forced open the front door. The Bomb and Explosive Detection Team used the robot to go inside and picked up footage of a man wearing clothing that matched that of the suspect.

Ansel Lewis was dead on the scene from what appeared to be a self-inflicted gunshot wound, Owens said.

Court records show the couple married in February 2021. Reinetta Lewis filed for divorce in December 2023, and that divorce was finalized in January.

On Feb. 28, Reinetta Lewis sought a protection order against her ex-husband, saying that he went onto her property and damaged things, even though police had told him not to go there.

She said she was receiving excessive phone calls, text messages and negative comments on Facebook from Ansel Lewis.

“Our thoughts and prayers are with the victim’s family during this difficult time,’’ Owens said.
