At least 7 now dead in Autauga County after storms, tornado strike Alabama

The death toll continues to mount in Autauga County after a tornado roared through central Alabama on Thursday.

Coroner Buster Barber said Friday morning another victim had been discovered and he was on his way to the undisclosed location. He said there could likely be more.

Autauga County EMA Director Ernie Baggett told the Associated Press Thursday that he could confirm six deaths. Today’s discovery would make at least seven.

Barber said he could not yet identify any of the victims.

At least 12 people were injured severely enough to be taken to hospitals by emergency responders, Baggett told AP on Thursday.

The National Weather Service today will assess the damage across Alabama.

So far one tornado has been confirmed, an EF-1 with top winds of 104 mph that carved a 30-mile track, through Lawrence, Morgan and Limestone counties.

In Butts County, Georgia, a 5-year-old died Thursday after being crushed by a tree. The child was a passenger in a car.
