DeSantis sending Florida state troopers to Panama City Beach, other popular spring break spots
Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis said he is sending state troopers to assist local law enforcement in some of Florida’s most-popular spring break spots — including Panama City Beach.
DeSantis made the announcement during a Tuesday morning appearance in Miami Beach, which will get about 45 of the 140 troopers being sent to assist the beach communities, according to the Miami Herald.
Another 15 state troopers will be assigned in south Florida, with the remainder divided amongst other communities including Fort Lauderdale, Daytona Beach and Panama City Beach. The exact number assigned to Panama City Beach wasn’t immediately available.
DeSantis said 17 local law enforcement agencies requested assistance for spring break, the Panama City News Herald reported.
“You are going to pay the price and we will hold you accountable, because that’s what we do here,” DeSantis warned would-be spring break lawbreakers. “Some people may be coming in from other jurisdictions where they can get away with this kind of activity. That is not going to fly in the Sunshine State.”
Twenty-four officers from the FHP Quick Response Force will be distributed in Bay County, along with Volusia, Broward and Miami-Dade counties, with drones and command vehicles used to monitor traffic. Troopers will also assist with crowd control, directing traffic, DUI checkpoints and providing security in residential neighborhoods.
In the wake of what officials termed a “lawless” spring break in 2022, Panama City Beach adopted a series of so-called “spring break laws” for 2023. In 2022, more than 160 people were arrested and roughly 75 weapons confiscated. Half of those arrested in 2022 were Alabama residents.
For the 2023 spring break season, Panama City Beach implemented a ban on alcohol sales from 2 a.m. to 7 a.m. Neighboring Panama City recently adopted the same policy to bring its regulations in line with Panama City Beach and Bay County.
In addition, the consumption of alcohol on the sand beach is illegal for the entire month of March.
