NFL Combine: How the state players did at the 2024 event

The three-cone drill has fallen into disfavor in recent years with the participants at the NFL Scouting Combine. This year, 77 of the prospects, only about one-quarter of those attending, visited the station to be timed.

But of those who tackled the three-cone drill in 2024, former American Christian Academy standout Kamari Lassiter was the fastest. The Georgia cornerback completed the three-cone drill in 6.62 seconds at Lucas Oil Stadium in Indianapolis.

Lassiter’s performance was the third-fastest by a player from an Alabama high school or college at the combine in this century.

Auburn cornerback Carlos Rogers recorded 6.48 seconds in the three-cone drill at the 2005 combine, and Troy safety Sherrod Martin went 6.60 seconds at the 2009 combine.

Lassiter is the first new name in the Alabama-roots top 10 since 2016, when Alabama cornerback Cyrus Jones’ 6.71 seconds placed him at seventh on the state list. Lassiter pushed Florida wide receiver Chad Jackson (Hoover) and his 6.73-second showing in 2006 out of the top 10.

The three-cone drill is designed to gauge a player’s ability to change directions on the run. With the cones in an L-shape, the player runs 5 yards to the middle cone and back, then runs around the middle cone, another 5 yards to the far cone and back around the L to the starting cone.

Four other prospects who played at Alabama high schools and colleges put their names among the state’s top 10 performances in this century in other measured events at this year’s combine.

Alabama edge rusher Dallas Turner had a 40.5-inch vertical jump that tied for 10th-best at the 2024 combine. It’s tied for the seventh-best on the Alabama-roots list.

With 42-inch efforts, only two Alabama players – defensive end Mark Anderson in 2006 and wide receiver Henry Ruggs III in 2020 – have recorded better vertical jumps than Turner at the combine.

The top mark on the state list is the 42.5 inches of Nebraska running back Ameer Abdullah (Homewood) at the 2015 combine.

Alabama wide receiver Jermaine Burton, Oregon cornerback Khyree Jackson (who played his first two college seasons at Alabama) and Auburn safety Jaylin Simpson tied for seventh in the broad jump at this year’s combine by clearing 11 feet, 1 inch.

That’s also tied for fourth-best among players with Alabama football roots at the combine in this century. The only better broad jumps recorded by players from Alabama high schools and colleges are 11 feet, 3 inches by Alabama wide receiver Julio Jones (Foley) in 2011 and Auburn wide receiver Darius Slayton in 2019 and 11 feet, 2 inches by Auburn fullback Carl Stewart in 2008.

The best performance for a player with Alabama football roots in each of the six measured drills at the 2024 NFL Scouting Combine included:

Bench press: 27 reps by Auburn defensive tackle Marcus Harris (Park Crossing). In the bench press, participants try to get as many repetitions as possible with a 225-pound weight bar.

40-yard dash: 4.36 seconds by Auburn cornerback Nehemiah Pritchett (Jackson)

Vertical jump: 40.5 inches by Alabama edge rusher Dallas Turner

Broad jump: 11 feet, 1 inch by Alabama wide receiver Jermaine Burton, Oregon cornerback Khyree Jackson (Alabama) and Auburn safety Jaylin Simpson

Three-cone drill: 6.62 seconds by Georgia cornerback Kamari Lassiter (American Christian)

Shuttle run: 4.12 seconds by Georgia cornerback Kamari Lassiter (American Christian)

Another player with Alabama football roots didn’t lead the state or the 2024 combine in any of the measured events, but UCF tackle Tylan Grable was a standout among the offensive linemen on Sunday. (Grable was at Jacksonville State from 2018 through 2021 before transferring to Central Florida.)

One of the five offensive linemen to run the 40 faster than five seconds on Sunday, Grable tied for the top spot in the broad jump with South Dakota State guard Mason McCormick at 9 feet, 9 inches and finished second in the vertical jump at 36.5 inches among the offensive linemen in 2024.

The NFL dates the modern history of its scouting combine to 2003. In that period, Grable’s vertical jump is tied for the third-best and his broad jump is tied for the eighth-best among offensive linemen.

Highlights from the full field in the measured drills at the 2024 combine included Texas wide receiver Xavier Worthy’s 4.21-second 40-yard dash and Texas Tech safety Tyler Owens’ 12-foot, 2-inch broad jump.

In modern era, no player has run the 40 faster than Worthy did on Saturday. Owens’ long jump was 10 inches farther than any other player at this year’s combine and came within 1 inch of tying the modern record.

The best performance for any player in the six measured drills at the 2024 NFL Scouting Combine included:

Bench press: 39 repetitions by Arkansas center Beaux Limmer

40-yard dash: 4.21 seconds by Texas wide receiver Xavier Worthy
