Birmingham warehouse worker critically injured in targeted shooting, police say

Gunfire inside a Birmingham warehouse Monday morning left one person critically injured.

Just before 8:50 a.m. Monday, officers were dispatched to Dawson Tarpaulins Inc. at 2617 24th Street North on a report of a shooting.

The business manufactures tarps for 18-wheelers.

Officer Truman Fitzgerald said they arrived to find the victim – an adult male employee- shot multiple times.

Birmingham Fire and Rescue Service rushed him to UAB Hospital with critical injuries.

The preliminary investigation shows the victim was working when the suspect, who has not yet been identified, entered the warehouse, and fired shots.

There are reports the shooter may also be an employee, Fitzgerald said. No arrests have been made.

“We have a man that was working hard this morning that was shot in his workplace and he’s fighting for his life,” Fitzgerald said.

Fitzgerald said it appears the victim was targeted.

“The suspect walks in the door, shoots the victim, and leaves the scene,” he said.

“It’s upsetting because so many of our shootings stem from suspect knows victim, victim knows suspect, they have some sort of relationship,’’ he said. “This is another shooting we’ve had where we believe the victim and suspect know one another.”

Investigators believe other employees may know the identity of the suspect but are afraid to come forward.

They are asked to call investigators at 205-254-1764 or anonymously at Crime Stoppers at 205-254-7777.
