NFL Combine: Which safety ran fastest on Friday?
Texas Tech’s Dadrion Taylor-Demerson clocked in with the fastest 40-yard dash on Friday among the 25 safeties at the 2024 NFL Scouting Combine.
Taylor-Demerson’s 4.41-second showing allowed him to edge TCU’s Millard Bradford by 0.01 seconds at the top of the safety speed chart at Lucas Oil Stadium in Indianapolis.
Auburn’s Jaylin Simpson tied for the third-fastest safety time with Utah’s Cole Bishop at 4.45 seconds.
Alabama’s Jaylen Key (who started his college career at UAB) was the only other player from an Alabama high school or college to run with the safety group, and he turned in a time of 4.60 seconds.
Six other SEC safeties ran the 40 at the combine on Friday:
· Ole Miss safety Daijahn Anthony: 4.55 seconds
· Georgia safety Javon Bullard: 4.47 seconds
· Missouri safety Jaylon Carlies: 4.50 seconds
· Texas A&M safety Demani Richardson: 4.60 seconds
· LSU safety Andre Sam: 4.59 seconds
· Georgia safety Tykee Smith: 4.46 seconds
In the other measured drills on Friday, the leaders among the safeties included:
Vertical jump: Texas Tech’s Tyler Owens got 41 inches off the ground to top the other safeties. Oregon’s Evan Williams at 40.5 inches came in second. Auburn’s Simpson tied for third with Utah’s Sione Vaki at 39.5 inches.
Broad jump: Owens blew away the competition by clearing 12 feet, 2 inches. The NFL considers the modern history of the combine to have started in 2003, and since that time, only one player has exceeded Owens’ distance. Owens came up 1 inch short of the 147 inches cleared by Connecticut cornerback Byron Jones in 2015.
Simpson ranked second at 11 feet, 1 inch on Friday, which is the third-best broad jump at the combine by an Auburn alumnus in this century. Wide receiver Darius Slayton cleared 11 feet, 3 inches in 2019, and fullback Carl Stewart went 11 feet, 2 inches in 2008.
