Hoover man ID’d as victim killed in southwest Birmingham gunfire

Authorities have released the name of a man found shot to death near a southwest Birmingham apartment complex earlier this week.

The Jefferson County Coroner’s Office identified the victim as Raul Angel Cajigas Jr. He was 23 and lived in Hoover.

The shooting happened about 10 p.m. Monday in the 200 block of Third Avenue S.W. That location is the University Crossings apartments, formerly known as Montello Gardens, in the Titusville community.

Police said Shot Spotter – the city’s gunfire detection system – alerted police to gunfire. While officers were en route, dispatchers were notified that someone had been shot.

Once on the scene, police found Cajigas on the sidewalk near the road. He was rushed to UAB Hospital where he was pronounced dead at 10:28 p.m.

Shot Spotter registered two different alerts – one with two shots, and the second with three shots.

It is the fourth time since 2022 that the apartments have been the scene of a homicide investigation. The last one was during Spring Break 2023 when a teen was killed in a shootout.

No arrests have been announced.
