Suspect fleeing Homewood police injured after vehicle hits pole

A suspect who fled from Homewood police after committing a traffic violation Wednesday night was seriously injured when his vehicle struck a utility pole, authorities said.

Officers attempted to stop a vehicle around 6:40 p.m. Wednesday on Lakeshore Parkway near Wildwood Parkway for a traffic violation when the vehicle refused to stop, said Sgt. John Carr.

As the vehicle approached the intersection of Lakeshore Parkway and West Oxmoor Road, the driver lost control and struck the pole, Carr said.

Officers then approached the vehicle and rendered aid to the suspect, who was the only occupant in the vehicle.

The suspect was taken to UAB Hospital with serious but non-life-threatening injuries, Carr said.

Charges are pending and the investigation is ongoing as police try to determine why the suspect fled the initial traffic stop.
