Man shot to death during morning argument inside east Birmingham home

A man was shot to death Wednesday morning inside an east Birmingham home.

Officers were dispatched shortly before 8:30 a.m. to house in the 7800 block of Seventh Court South on a report of a person shot.

Officer Truman Fitzgerald said they arrived to find the shooting victim unresponsive inside the home. Birmingham Fire and Rescue Serviced pronounced the man dead on the scene.

There were at least two young children in the home when deadly shooting took place.

Investigators believe there was a domestic argument between two people at the residence. After that argument, the victim went to the home and he was then involved in another argument with a man who police describe as the suspect.

It was during the second argument that victim was shot. He fled the scene.

The suspect is not in custody but police know his identity. All involved knew each other.

“Our detectives are going to speak to those witnesses and we hope to uncover more facts surrounding this investigation,’’ Fitzgerald said.

Police brought out a car seat to transport one of the children to police headquarters while the parents are questioned as witnesses.

“It speaks to the sad reality that these children were present when someone lost their life,’’ Fitzgerald said.

The victim is Birmingham’s 18th homicide this year. Of those, one has been ruled justifiable and therefore not deemed criminal.

In all of Jefferson County, there have been 23 homicides including the 18 in Birmingham.
