Temperatures are expected to move in the wrong direction today for parts of Alabama, according to forecasters.

Readings across Alabama on as of 6 a.m. Wednesday were in the 60s and 70s across the state. But a cold front is coming, and once it passes through the mercury will begin to fall.

Here are the forecast temperatures at 3 p.m. today, showing much colder readings in north Alabama while parts of south Alabama will be in the 80s:

Today’s front will bring rain to Alabama, and maybe a thunderstorm or two, but no severe weather is expected. Here’s today’s severe weather outlook from the Storm Prediction Center. The areas in green could have thunderstorms, but there is no organized severe weather risk for Alabama:

The cooler air will really be felt tonight, with lows dropping into the upper 20s and 30s in north Alabama, the low to mid-30s in central Alabama and the low 40s in south Alabama:

Thursday is expected to be much cooler statewide, with highs only reaching the 50s in north and north-central Alabama and the 60s elsewhere:

More cooler temperatures and rain are expected on Friday in Alabama, but temperatures are forecast to warm up starting this weekend, and readings in the 70s are expected for the entire state by Sunday.

There are signs that March could remain on the warm side for Alabama. Long-range temperature outlooks from NOAA’s Climate Prediction Center don’t include any suggestions of below-average temperatures for Alabama through at least mid-March.
