Birmingham native Carson Muir among 3 Wyoming swimmers killed in car accident

Birmingham native Carson Muir was among three University of Wyoming swimmers killed in a car accident in Colorado on Thursday, according to a statement by the school president on Friday.

Muir, 18, Charlie Clark, 19, and Luke Slabber, 21, all died in the single-vehicle crash that happened at around 2:45 p.m. Mountain time on U.S. Highway 287 northwest of Livermore, Colo. The wreck happened about 10 miles south of the Wyoming-Colorado state line.

“My thoughts and prayers are with our swimming and diving student-athletes, coaches, families and friends,” Wyoming athletics director Tom Burman said in a statement issued by the school. “It is difficult to lose members of our University of Wyoming family, and we mourn the loss of these student-athletes. We have counseling services available to our student-athletes and coaches in our time of need.”

Muir, a Spain Park High School graduate, was a freshman for the Cowgirls, specializing in freestyle and butterfly events and majoring in animal and veterinary sciences. As a senior in high school, she won the Class 6A-7A championship in the girls 500-meter freestyle at the AHSAA state meet in December 2022.

Clark was a sophomore from Las Vegas, Nev., while Slabber was a junior from Cape Town, South Africa. Two other members of the Wyoming swimming and diving team, whose names have not been released, were also injured in the accident.

“I am heartbroken to learn of the tragic deaths of three University of Wyoming student-athletes in a motor vehicle accident on U.S. 287 in Colorado,” Gov. Mark Gordon said in a statement issued to WyomingNews.com. “Jennie and I join the entire university community and all of Wyoming in mourning this loss, and we ask you to keep their families, friends and loved ones close to your hearts during this difficult time.”
