American Airlines is raising prices for checked bags

Passengers checking bags on American Airlines flights should expect to pay more.

The airline announced this week it’s raising its fees for checked bags— the price of the first checked bag on most flights is increasing from $30 to $40. For luggage checked in online, the fee will increase from $30 to $35.

The carrier is raising its fee for a second checked bag from checked bag from $40 to $45, whether the fee is paid online or at the airport.

NBC reports this is the first time since 2018 that American Airlines has increased its checked bag fee.

The new charges have kicked in for all flights booked since Feb. 20. Passengers who brought tickets before that date will pay the previous prices, reports CNN.

While prices for checked bags have increased, American says it is introducing the “lowest fee ever” for oversize and overweight luggage. Passengers who check bags that are 50 to 70 lbs overweight currently pay $100 to $200. The airline’s new fee structure, according to a press release, will charge customers $30 for bags that are 50–53 lbs overweight and $100–$200 for bags that are 53–70 lbs. overweight.
