Playing for Gumbo: Jimmy Buffett has cameo in Hulu series

Jimmy Buffett gets a surprise posthumous cameo and tribute in the new season of “Life & Beth,” an Amy Schumer-Michael Cera comedy-drama series on Hulu.

The Hulu original series launched in 2022, with Schumer playing Beth, a woman finding herself amid something of a midlife crisis while also finding love with John, an offbeat farmer who is diagnosed with autism spectrum disorder. Hulu recently made the second season available for streaming.

In the second episode, John and Beth make trip to New Orleans for a wedding. Beth’s friend Maya (Yamaneika Saunders) complains that they’re “whitejacking” her trip to Essence Fest, and, true to her fears, most of their motley crew of family and friends make the trip.

The half-hour show packs in a lot of New Orleans: Ben Jaffe and other members of Preservation Hall Jazz Band play a significant part in the storyline, and Big Freedia also has a speaking part. Buffett’s role is smaller, though he’s highly visible: He’s seen busking, performing “I Will Play for Gumbo” as Schumer and Cera walk past. He remains visible in the background as they move along with their discussion.

Speaking for a USA Today interview, Schumer said that Buffett’s appearance came out of a friendship with Buffett and his wife and daughter.

“Well, rest in peace, Jimmy, I was lucky enough to be friends with him, get to spend time with him, and I’m so grateful that we had that time with him in New Orleans, where he started out as a musician busking in the French quarter for money,” she said. “I thought it was a hypothetical that we talked about, but when the time came, he said, ‘I’m coming.’”

He’s on an empty sidewalk in the scene, but Schumer said the shooting attracted an audience across the street. “I don’t even think they knew it was Jimmy Buffett, I think they just were enjoying it,” she said.

The episode ends with a tribute leading the credits: “In loving memory of Jimmy Buffett, who got his start busking on the streets of New Orleans.”

“Life & Beth” can be seen on Hulu.
