Tabe, South Alabama basketball win at Southern Miss
Samuel Tabe had his second straight big game with 29 points as South Alabama cruised past Southern Miss 83-64 in Hattiesburg, Miss., on Thursday night.
The Jaguars (14-14, 6-9 Sun Belt Conference) never trailed in the game, and led by at least eight points for the entire second half. South Alabama went 8-for-13 on 3-pointers in the game, including 4 of 5 in the first half.
Tabe, who scored a career-high 35 in last Saturday’s loss to Arkansas State, went 10-for-14 from the field and 9-for-11 from the free-throw line. Isiah Gaiter added 17 points off the bench, while Tyrell Jones scored 12 and pulled down eight rebounds and Julian Margrave made a trio of 3-pointers.
Southern Miss (15-13, 8-7) got 14 points from Cobie Montgomery, 13 from Victor Hart and 11 from Austin Crowley. The Golden Eagles were hit with three technical fouls late in the game — one on Crowley and two on Andre Curbelo, causing his ejection after being held scoreless in 12 minutes.
South Alabama heads to Arkansas State on Saturday, with tip-off set for 2:30 p.m.
Arkansas State 79, Troy 71
The Red Wolves blew a double-digit second-half lead on Thursday night in Jonesboro, Ark., but did just enough in the game’s final three minutes to record their second victory over the Trojans in eight days.
Taryn Todd scored 17 points to lead five players in double-figures for Arkansas State (14-14, 9-6), which also won 82-71 in Troy last Thursday. Freddie Hicks posted a double-double with 14 points and 12 rebounds (and four blocks) for the Red Wolves, while Izaiyah Nelson added 13 and eight (and also four blocks).
Troy (18-10, 11-4) trailed by 12 at 50-38 with 12 minutes left, but stormed back to take a 66-65 lead with 3:11 to play. Arkansas State scored nine of the next 11 points to go up 74-68, but the Trojans’ Aamer Muhammad drilled a 3-pointer with 40 seconds left to make it a one-score game.
Muhammad stole the ball away from Hicks and passed off to Christyon Eugene, but Nelson blocked Eugene’s shot and Todd came up with the loose ball. Todd then made a pair of free throws with 25 seconds left to put the game away.
Victor Valdes and Tayton Conerway both scored 16 points for Troy, while Muhammad added 14 and Rigsby 11. The Trojans got outrebounded 38-30 in the game, but had a 12-8 edge on the offensive glass.
Troy, now in third place in the Sun Belt standings, travels to Louisiana-Monroe at 2:30 p.m. Saturday.
