Former Alabama running back Ahmaad Galloway dies

Former Alabama running back Ahmaad Galloway died Monday in Missouri, WVTM reported Wednesday.

Galloway, 42, was an English teacher at a middle school in St. Louis. The school’s principal told WVTM that Galloway was found during a welfare check at his apartment.

“Ahmaad was always on time, very responsible, so we knew something might be wrong,” Compton-Drew Middle School principal Susan Reid told the station. “There wasn’t anything disrupted at Ahmaad’s apartment, so we are thinking that it could have been a medical issue.

“The medical examiner is working to find out how Ahmaad died.”

Galloway, originally from Tennessee, joined Alabama in 1999 and began earning significant playing time in 2000 after Shawn Alexander was drafted to the NFL. He ran for 1,540 and 13 touchdowns as a sophomore and junior, but had his senior season in 2002 cut short by a knee injury.

The Denver Broncos drafted Galloway in the seventh round of the 2003 NFL draft, and he later spent time with the San Diego Chargers and in NFL Europe.

Galloway shared the Tide’s backfield with Santonio Beard, who was shot and killed last year in Georgia.
