Kentucky basketball ties Alabama football’s field-rush record

Kentucky men’s basketball tied Alabama’s football’s record Wednesday for most-rushed against program in the SEC since the conference began implementing field-entry fines in 2004. When the Wildcats lost on a buzzer-beater at LSU, the Tiger faithful took to the floor, it was the seventh time that opposing fans had rushed the court against UK MBB.

The mark only counts field or court rushes that incurred fines from the SEC during that period. It would not include rushes by fans schools in other conferences.

The Wildcats were actually in third-place for most-rushed-against before the 2023-24 basketball season began, behind both Alabama and LSU football (six rushes). South Carolina also rushed the court after beating the Wildcats earlier in the campaign.

The SEC put new rules in place in 2023 to try and discourage field and rushes from happening. Under the new fine structure, a first offense is a $100,000 fine, paid to the losing school, a second offense is $250,000, while subsequent fines top out at $500,000.

The fine will increase LSU’s lead as the most-penalized school by dollar amount. It brings the Tigers’ total up to $705,000, passing Vanderbilt, which sits at $630,000.

Kentucky remains the school with the highest amount of fines levied against it for field and court stormings. Wildcat fans have rushed six times since 2004, all of them after football victories.

Alabama is one of three schools that have never incurred a field-rush fine, joining Georgia and Mississippi State.
