Nikki Haley agrees with Alabama Supreme Court embryo decision: ‘That’s a life’

The Alabama Supreme Court reached the correct decision when it ruled that frozen embryos are “children,” according to Republican presidential candidate Nikki Haley.

“Embryos, to me, are babies,” the former South Carolina governor told NBC News in a story published Wednesday. “When you talk about an embryo, you are talking about – to me, that’s a life.”

The 8-1 decision finding that frozen embryos are people under the state’s Wrongful Death of a Minor Act sent shock waves across the country when the all-Republican court ruled that three couples can sue for wrongful death when their embryos were destroyed by an Alabama hospital patient.

Advocates for in vitro fertilization warned that the ruling has dire consequences for the procedure’s future in Alabama.

On the heels of the ruling, UAB Hospital paused IVF treatments amid concerns over being prosecuted.

Haley, who had her son through artificial insemination, said the impact on IVF treatments is something that needs to be looked at.

“I think that we have to have those conversations. That’s incredibly personal, it’s incredibly sensitive, and I think that’s a conversation the doctor needs to have with the patient,” she said. “Never underestimate the importance of the relationship between doctor and patient when they’re doing any of that.”
