Tommy Lee twirling a drumstick in his right-hand mid-song is an indelible image from ‘80s Mötley Crüe concerts and music videos.

Unfortunately, Lee, the “Shout at the Devil” band’s beloved drummer, hasn’t been able to twirl his sticks in a few years.

The 62-year-old rocker’s been suffering from Dupuytren’s contracture, a thickening of hand tissues that can cause fingers to contract toward the palm, and from carpel tunnel syndrome.

In addition to impacting Lee’s drumming, this hindered his ability to play keyboards, essential to Mötley’s signature power-ballad, “Home Sweet Home.”

Recently, Lee underwent hand surgery. This weekend, he posted an update on his Instagram. “Yesterday was f–king monumental for me to the point of tears,” Lee wrote. “I have my life back and my money makers.”

As part of his Instagram post, Lee shared a series of photos. The first depicted his right-hand before surgery, with his fingers (particularly his ring finger) noticeably contracted because of his Dupuytren’s. The second and third photos showed his hand mid-surgery. “Well kids, it’s show n tell time,” Lee quipped in the caption. “Hope this doesn’t wreck your lunch.”

A fourth photo depicted a five-centimeter mass removed from Lee’s hand. A fifth image showed Lee’s hand post-operation, stitched up from his inside wrist most of the way up his ring finger.

The final image is a video of Lee — the world’s oldest teenager in spirit – spinning a drumstick again and smiling big, while clade in a designer toboggan and lightning-bolt adorned long-sleeve T.

Mötley Crüe hits the road again beginning May 3 with a show in Atlantic City. In addition to original members Lee, singer Vince Neil and bassist/primary lyricist Nikki Sixx, the band now features shredder John 5 on guitar, following the controversial parting of ways with the band’s legendary lead guitarist Mick Mars last year. Meanwhile, Mars’ highly-anticipated debut solo album release this Friday. This summer will mark the 35th anniversary of Mötley Crüe’s chart-topping album “Dr. Feelgood.”
