Baby piglet thrown around like football at New Orleans Mardi Gras needs home
A baby pig being tossed around like a football during a New Orleans Mardi Gras celebration is now safe, healthy and in need of a home.
Although it’s unclear exactly when, the Humane Society of Louisiana said it was during a New Orleans Mardi Gras parade a woman spotted three men tossing the piglet back and forth to each other “like a Nerf football.”
How the men came into possession of the piglet or where it came from wasn’t immediately known.
The woman approached the men and somehow managed to convince them to give her the tiny pig. From there, the baby pig was turned over to the Humane Society. The piglet was examined by the Metairie Small Animal Hospital, which determined he had not been injured in the incident, according to NOLA.com.
“He’s resting comfortably, enjoying life as a pig again, and getting lots of rest, attention and TLC,” the Humane Society said in a Sunday update.
Donations raised roughly $500 in 24 hours to assist with the tiny pig’s exams and recovery. He’s now in the care of a foster parent — a technician with the animal hospital who has named him, appropriately enough, “Piglet.”
“We are grateful that Piglet was removed from such a harsh environment,” said Jeff Dorson of the Humane Society, “and is now enjoying the comfort of a safe and secure space, which we hope that every animal gets to experience while on our planet.”
Dorson also said in a Facebook video Piglet had a “sleepover” with some possums in order to begin to acclimate him with other animals.
Piglet is up for adoption and NOLA.com reports two people have already filled out adoption applications, including Louisiana State Rep. Lauren Ventrella.
