Top-ranked Good Hope cruises past perennial power Deshler
Top-ranked Good Hope outscored perennial power Deshler 21-9 in the first quarter on Monday and rolled to a 68-45 victory in the Class 4A girls Northwest Regional semifinals in Hanceville.
The Raiders will play Priceville or Hamilton at 4 p.m. Wednesday for the right to head to Birmingham for the final four.
“We had a lot of confidence in that in that first quarter,” Good Hope coach Justin Aby said. “Yeah, I mean I think it was huge. I mean, there there’s a reason they’ve gotten 7-8-9, however many state championships they’ve got. You know, they’re well coached. They always have a great team. I felt like we had an awesome job by our fans. It seemed like we had a packed house and then, obviously, us getting to a quick start, I think that did nothing, nothing but help us out.”
Deshler has won eight state girls championships, the last coming in 2022. However, the Tigers shot just 28.6 percent from the field (16-of-56) on Monday and 18.8 percent from 3-point range (6-of-32). Good Hope shot 44.8 percent from the field (26-of-58) and 32 percent from 3-point range (9-of-28).

“I know for sure these past few years when we didn’t beat them was pretty stinking annoying,” Good Hope senior Ivey Maddox said. “So, this year, winning by 20 plus it, I can’t describe it. Like I’m running out of breath just talking.”
Maddox finished with 16 points and 14 rebounds for the Raiders. Junior Ava McSwain led the team with 30 points on 12-of-20 shooting from the field and 4-of-7 from 3-point range. She also had 8 rebounds.
Reece Davis led Deshler with 12 points, while Malea Graves scored 11.
Good Hope had a 34-16 edge in points in the paint.
