Why do mattresses go on sale on Presidents Day?

George Washington slept here. On this mattress. We promise.

As a holiday, Presidents Day doesn’t rank up there with say, July 4th, Thanksgiving or Christmas. Unless you need a mattress, that is, and then it’s YOUR holiday.

But have you ever wondered why mattresses always go on sale on Presidents Day? There is a method to the madness, experts said.

According to MarketRealist.com, the mattress industry decided to launch its best marketing campaigns in February to cash in on buyers with money, potentially from people flush with tax refunds who might want to splurge on an out-of-the-ordinary purchase.

In other months of the year, there are other more pressing needs, moving mattresses, an item that’s rarely replaced, to the back burner. You couple that with an industry-created shopping day in a slow period after Valentine’s Day but before Easter and you have a perfect sense of immediacy that brings people to the store in search of bargains.

If you are one of the people hitting up the Presidents Day mattress sales, you can expect to spend a good bit even with discounts. Sleepfoundation.org estimates people will spend anywhere between $250 to $3,500-plus to get a mattress with some deluxe versions topping out at more than $5,000.

Thankfully, mattresses are almost a once-a-decade buy. Experts said you should upgrade your mattress about every seven to eight years.

Most likely you will do that buying in February.
