Auburn’s Jaylin Williams’ knee injury found to be ‘non-season ending’ after evaluation

Bruce Pearl, Auburn’s 13th-ranked men’s basketball team and Auburn’s collective fanbase can all share a sigh of relief.

Per Auburn, the knee injury sustained by Auburn fifth-year forward Jaylin Williams during Saturday’s loss to Kentucky was found to be “non-season ending” after initial evaluation Sunday morning.

“Graduate senior forward Jaylin Williams was evaluated this morning and has a non-season ending knee injury,” Auburn wrote in a statement Sunday.

Auburn’s statement came on the heels of Williams himself taking to X, the social platform formerly known as Twitter, to pen a quick, but encouraging post.

“I’m going to be fine,” Williams wrote.

Williams appeared to injure his right knee after going up for a contested dunk and landing awkwardly midway through the second half of Saturday’s loss to No. 22 Kentucky. Williams went on to be helped to the locker room, not putting any weight on the injured leg, and never returned to Auburn’s bench as the Tigers fell 70-59.

Following the game, Auburn head coach Bruce Pearl sounded concerned that Williams’ injury could be significant.

“We think he’s got to have something; we think it’s something. It’s not just a bang; he had pivot,” Pearl said. “We’ll do an MRI tomorrow and then we’ll take a look at it.”.

And while Williams’ initial evaluation came back with positive results, it’s unclear how much time he could miss, meaning Pearl and the Tigers will likely still have to do some retooling to replace the production of Williams, who is Auburn’s all-time winningest player and is averaging 13 points and 4.7 rebounds per game this season.

“If Jaylin’s out, we’re going to have to figure some things out,” Pearl said after Saturday’s loss. “I think we have guys that will step up. But Jaylin Williams is — he and Johni Broome are our two best players. So if he’s out for a little while, it’s got to be next man up. That’s a significant loss.”

Fortunately for Pearl and the Tigers, in addition to Sunday morning’s news that Williams could return before the season’s end, Auburn has finally reached its bye week, meaning there isn’t a mid-week tilt to prepare for and the Tigers have a bit of additional time to figure out how to move forward without Williams — for now, at least.

Auburn is set to return to action on Feb. 24 as it visits Georgia.
