Rosters set for Alabama-Mississippi All-Star Basketball Classic
Alabama’s All-Star boys’ and girls’ teams have been selected for the 34th annual Alabama-Mississippi All-Star Basketball Classic set to be played in Mississippi in March.
The two teams were announced Brandon Dean, director of the AHSAA’s Alabama High School Athletic Directors & Coaches Association today. The rosters of 12 players each were selected from coaches’ nominations by the AHSADCA All-Star Selection Committee.
“Once again our selection committee has completed a very difficult task and has done an outstanding job,” said Dean. “We had an abundance of talent to choose from thanks to our member school coaches who nominated so many deserving players.”
The Alabama girls are being coached by Hewitt-Trussville’s Tonya Hunter and Natasha Smallwood of Susan Moore High School. Tammy West of Cold Springs High School is Alabama’s administrative coach.
The Alabama boys’ all-star coaches are Patrick Harding of Buckhorn High School and Marshon Harper of Valley High School. Saraland’s Dru Powell is the boys’ administrative coach.
Among the top players on the Alabama girls’ roster are Hazel Green’s Leah Brooks and Pleasant Grove’s Tamya Smith. Both helped teams win state titles in 2023. Brooks plans to attend the University of Alabama and Smith will be heading the University of Memphis. Two other players, Syriah Daniels of Auburn, and Jordan Hunter of Hewitt-Trussville are heading to Auburn University. Hunter is the daughter of all-star team coach Tonya Hunter.
Harding and Hunter both coached their teams to state titles last season with the Bucks winning in Class 6A and the Rams going 33-0 to win the 5A state title. They will be coaching a team anchored by big men Brandon Thomas of Valley and Samford signee Caleb Harrison of Huntsville, who has helped the Class 7A Crimson Panthers advance to the Northeast Regional finals next week with a 31-2 record.
Fairhope guard Spence Sims is also heading to Alabama and Keith guard Tommy Tisdale had a career high 51 points in one game earlier this month.
Alabama swept the series last year with Alabama’s girls beating Mississippi 88-74 to improve to 19-14 in the series. The boys won 91-72 and now hold an 18-15 in the series, which was first played in Florence at the University of North Alabama in 1991.
