YMCA ready to sell downtown Birmingham branch building
The YMCA Birmingham downtown branch, located on a key piece of real estate at the corner of 21st Street (Richard Arrington Jr. Blvd. North) and Fourth Avenue North, has been attracting offers from potential buyers.
The YMCA has been listening, and the offers are sounding good enough to tempt the Y to find a new location in downtown.
“Over the last few months the YMCA of Greater Birmingham has received several offers for our downtown building,” said Dan Pile, president and CEO of the YMCA of Greater Birmingham in a statement released today. “We remain committed to the downtown community and as good stewards of our resources and mission, our Board of Directors is duty-bound to explore all options. Downtown’s workforce has shifted, and so has the demand for a Y this size in this area. The YMCA of Greater Birmingham is actively seeking alternative locations for our Downtown YMCA programs and services.”
The four-story building has been the downtown home of the YMCA since 1985.
Pile did not identify potential buyers, although there have been multiple offers.
