North Alabama man killed after Jeep overturns and hits fence, pole

A 35-year-old man died after the Jeep he was driving overturned and hit a fence and a pole early Thursday morning in Cherokee County, authorities said.

Donald E. Barnes, 35, of Leesburg, was driving a 2009 Jeep Cherokee on Cherokee County Road 53 near Cherokee County Road 361 when the vehicle left the road, struck two culverts and overturned around 5 a.m. Thursday, said Alabama Law Enforcement Agency Senior Trooper Brandon Bailey.

The Jeep then struck a fence and a utility pole, Bailey said.

Barnes, who was not wearing a seat belt at the time of the crash, was pronounced dead at the scene of the wreck about six miles south of Collinsville.

Further information was unavailable as authorities continued to investigate the wreck.
