Georgia State football coach Shawn Elliott leaving to become SEC assistant, reports say

Georgia State head football coach Shawn Elliott has resigned to become tight ends coach at South Carolina, according to multiple reports.

Elliott, 50, went 41-44 in seven seasons with the Panthers. Georgia State finished 7-6 in 2023, winning the Famous Idaho Potato Bowl.

Elliott becomes the latest FBS head coach to leave for an assistant job elsewhere, a list that also includes South Alabama’s Kane Wommack (Alabama defensive coordinator), Buffalo’s Maurice Linguist (Alabama defensive backs coach), UCLA’s Chip Kelly (Ohio State offensive coordinator) and Boston College’s Jeff Hafley (Green Bay Packers offensive coordinator). The move also comes after the Panthers had already begun spring practice.

Elliott was previously on staff at South Carolina from 2010-16, mainly as offensive line coach. He also served as interim head coach for the final six games of 2015 after Steve Spurrier resigned, posting a 1-5 record.
