Deadly shooting outside Birmingham Dollar General remains unsolved; police seek information
Authorities are asking for the public’s help in the December death of a 26-year-old man killed in a hail outside a Birmingham Dollar General.
Exavier Tywan Mitchell was found dead just before 2:30 p.m. that Tuesday in the parking lot of the store in the 2300 block of Bessemer Road.
Shot Spotter, the city’s gunfire detection system, indicated at least 16 rounds fired.
Mitchell had collapsed just outside his black SUV.
According to police radio communications, a dark vehicle fled the scene.
Officer Truman Fitzgerald said they don’t believe the shooting was random, and the victim may have known his killer.
“This incident happened in broad daylight,’’ Fitzgerald said at the time.
Multiple grieving family members rushed to the scene, including the victim’s mother.
“You cannot begin to describe the screams we have heard on this call,’’ Fitzgerald said. “That’s something you never get used to.”
