Cornerbacks coach Wesley McGriff signs new 2-year deal in Auburn return

After a back-and-forth two-week saga that saw Auburn cornerbacks coach Wesley McGriff reportedly leave Auburn for Texas A&M, have Texas A&M announce McGriff’s hire and then quickly return to Auburn, McGriff has signed a new two-year deal to once again be on head coach Hugh Freeze’s staff, according to a copy of his contract acquired by AL.com.

McGriff signed a two-year deal when he joined Freeze’s staff before the 2023 season that paid him $600,000 in 2023.

Under the new deal that covers the 2024 and 2025 seasons, McGriff will make $650,000 in 2024 and $750,000 in 2025 based on the retention bonuses in his contract.

The contract includes a full buyout clause for McGriff should he be fired without cause but does also include a mitigation clause if McGriff were to get a new “football coaching or related” job before the Jan. 31, 2026 expiration date of his contract.

Should McGriff choose to leave Auburn, he would owe $350,000 if he were to do so before Dec. 20, 2024. He would owe $200,000 if he were to leave before the final regular season game or the SEC championship game during the 2025 season.

Those payments are voided if McGriff leaves for an FBS head coaching job, a play-calling coordinator job or any NFL job.

McGriff’s performance bonuses are identical to Auburn’s other assistant coach contracts.
