16-year-old shot dead in dispute over $10 for vape pen in Mississippi, police say

A 16-year-old Mississippi coast resident was shot and killed in a dispute over $10 for a vape pen, according to police in Gulfport, Miss.

Police responded to the scene of a reported shooting Monday about 2:20 a.m., where they discovered the body of 16-year-old Zaelyn Braxton in the doorway of a home. He was pronounced dead at the scene from apparent multiple gunshot wounds, police said.

Tuesday, police arrested 18-year-old Elijah Lamar Eckford and charged him with 2nd-degree murder.

Investigators told the outlet Braxton and Eckford had gotten into an argument over $10 for a vape pen before Eckford shot Braxton several times and fled the scene in a vehicle driven by 21-year-old Tai’shawn Rashaud Holloway.

Holloway, police said, drove Eckford to Braxton’s location, waited for the sound of gunshots, then returned to the scene to drive Eckford away. Holloway has been charged with accessory after the fact. A third person in the vehicle was charged with marijuana possession.

Eckford and Holloway remained in the Harrison County Adult Detention Center as of Wednesday afternoon.

According to WLOX, Eckford had been enrolled in the “Before the Bullet” — a youth development mentorship program run by the Gulfport Police Department in which police try to provide positive guidance for at-risk youth.

If convicted, Eckford could face life in prison if a jury supports that sentence through a separate proceeding. If the jury declines to impose a life sentence, he faces a sentence of 20-40 years in a state penitentiary.
