Panama City restricting alcohol sales during spring break 2024
While many were consuming copious amounts of alcohol while celebrating Fat Tuesday, officials in Panama City, Fla., were moving to restrict its sale during spring break.
Panama City commissioners voted Tuesday to approve an ordinance which will prohibit the sale of alcohol anywhere in Panama City between the hours of 2 a.m. and 7 a.m. between March 15-31, according to the Panama City News Herald.
Commissioners said the ordinance is designed to better control the large number of visitors to the city during spring break and to bring Panama City’s alcohol regulations in line with Panama City Beach and Bay County.
In previous years, once bars and stores stopped selling alcohol in Panama City Beach or areas of unincorporated Bay County, they would simply drive into Panama City to buy it.
“As (Panama City) Beach closes, people come over the bridge and they kind of continue to party on (the) town side,” said commissioner Josh Street. “That leads to a lot of increases in crime.”
Alcohol is already prohibited on all Bay County beaches at any time during the month of March.
The Herald reported that officials with the Panama City Beach Police Department and the Bay County Sheriff’s Office are expecting large crowds for spring break this year.
