Oscar Mayer Wienermobile making two stops in Alabama, with UA grad behind the wheel

The Oscar Mayer Wienermobile is scheduled to make two stops in the Birmingham area this weekend, and we wouldn’t be surprised to hear shouts of “Roll Tide!” aimed at one of the “Hotdoggers” behind the wheel.

University of Alabama graduate Jimmy Creamer, known as “Jumbo Dog Jimmy,” has been traveling across the country as a Wienermobile driver since June 2023. Creamer is scheduled to be with the Wienermobile when it arrives in his home state, hitting the brakes at the Walmart Supercenter in Gardendale (Saturday, Feb. 17, 12 p.m.-6 p.m., 890 Odum Road) and the Arc Realty office in Vestavia Hills (Sunday, 12 p.m.-3 p.m., 3215 Endeavor Lane).

“Jimmy grew up in Birmingham (Vestavia Hills) and went on to attend the University of Alabama,” his fellow Wienermobile driver, Ann “Angus Ann” Kerr, said in an email to AL.com. “Following his graduation this past year, he was chosen from a pool of over 3,000 applicants to become an official Oscar Mayer Hotdogger and drive the Wienermobile around the country for an entire year. His adventures have taken him many places, but nothing will top pulling the Wienermobile into his driveway this weekend.”

On his LinkedIn profile, Creamer lists his job as “Brand Specialist and Wienermobile Spokesperson,” and describes himself as a “charismatic self-starter” who’s passionate about “digital media, sales and experimental marketing.”

On the Wienermobile website, Creamer is a little more casual, giving shout-outs to his hometown and alma mater, then noting that his favorite hot dog topping is “perfectly plain.” Creamer also says he has a tattoo of the Wienermobile, but doesn’t specifying the location.

Creamer is one of 12 people representing the Oscar Mayer brand on the Wienermobile right now, and the only current Hotdogger from Alabama. The company has six Wienermobiles in its fleet, traveling throughout the United States with two drivers per vehicle.

Each Wienermobile is a 27-foot-long replica of a hot dog on wheels, but these vehicles aren’t cross-country food trucks. Instead of hot dog samples, drivers give out souvenir Wiener Whistles at each stop on their schedule (while supplies last). They also meet and greet folks who show up, conduct media interviews, maintain the Wienermobile and spread the word about the Wienermobile on social media.

Wienermobile drivers cover an average of 20,000 miles during their yearlong tenure, visiting more than 20 states and handing out about 250,000 Wiener Whistles, according to a January report from USA Today. Competition for the jobs is steep, from what we hear, and most Hotdoggers, like Creamer, are recent college graduates with degrees in public relations, communications, advertising, marketing and the like.

Wienermobile drivers aren’t volunteers; the salary for the next group of Hotdoggers is $35,600 per driver, USA Today says, citing a 2024 job listing by Oscar Mayer. Drivers also receive perks such as a weekly allowance of $150 for meals and personal travel, 18 days of paid time off, a health benefits package and hotel expenses, USA Today says.

The Oscar Mayer Wienermobile has appeared in Alabama before, stopping in Gardendale in 2013, visiting Montgomery in 2015, heading to Mobile in 2016 and more. The Wienermobile even made a special detour in 2017, driving a teen couple from Decatur to Stone Bridge Farm in Cullman for that year’s Priceville High School prom.
