Shootings, stabbings mar end of Sunday Mardi Gras festivities in Mobile
Two shootings and a stabbing brought a violent end to Sunday’s Mardi Gras festivities in Mobile and sent four people to the hospital, according to Mobile police.
The first of the three incidents occurred about 6 p.m., when officers assigned to work Mardi Gras parades were notified of a fight in the parking lot of Bayside Church on Dauphin Street.
When they arrived, police found a male victim suffering from multiple lacerations, according to a release from MPD, although Chief Paul Prine told WALA Sunday there were two stabbing victims.
The release said one victim had been involved in the fight and was accidentally injured by an acquaintance who was attempting to break up the fight between the victim and two others.
A second incident, just five minutes after the first, Mobile officers were dispatched to the intersection of Anthony Street and N. Warren Street on a report of a gunshot victim.
Officers found the victim, who had been approached by two unknown males who shot the victim multiple times.
The man was transported to a local hospital with what were described as non-life-threatening injuries.
Finally, about 6:20 p.m., police working Mardi Gras detail near Springhill Avenue and Broad Street heard the sound of gunfire. When they found the source of the gun shots, the learned two bystanders — a male and a female — had both been struck by gunfire.
Initial investigation indicated a married couple had engaged in a verbal altercation and, as friends of the couple tried to diffuse the situation, 31-year-old Charlesa Kate Welch drew a weapon and attempted to shoot the husband involved in the altercation, but instead struck the two bystanders.
The two bystanders were taken to a local hospital for treatment. Police said their injuries didn’t appear serious.
Welch remained in Mobile Metro Jail as of Monday morning, charged with two counts of 1st-degree assault. She is held without bond pending a Monday court hearing.
