Severe weather possible today, Monday in Alabama: What to know

Several rounds of storms will be possible today and Monday in Alabama, and some of them could be severe.

The National Weather Service said damaging winds, tornadoes, hail and heavy rain will all be possible with each round of storms.

The weather service on Sunday morning was also becoming more concerned about heavy rain. Some parts of the state could get 2 to 3 inches through Monday night:

Today’s strongest storms could reach the state later this afternoon and last into tonight. NOAA’s Storm Prediction Center has expanded a Level 2 out of 5 severe weather risk in Alabama for today. It now includes much of west and central Alabama.

A Level 2 risk means that scattered severe storms will be possible.

Much of the rest of the state — except for part of north Alabama — has a Level 1 risk today, which means that isolated severe storms will be possible.

The weather service has noted that some storms will be possible overnight, so Alabamians are urged to have two reliable ways of getting weather warnings that could wake them up if a severe storm comes their way.

More storms will be possible into Monday, and the Storm Prediction Center has expanded a Level 2 out of 5 severe weather risk to cover more of the state.

Nearly all of the rest of Alabama will also have a Level 1 risk on Monday.

The weather service has noted that Monday’s storm potential is more uncertain because it’s unclear if the atmosphere can recover from Sunday’s storms. However, the SPC in its latest forecast update added more of the state to its Level 2 risk area.

Rain and storms are expected to move out of Alabama from west to east during the day on Monday, and drier and cooler weather is expected on Tuesday.

The weather service is forecasting temperatures to warm some through the week before the next chance for rain, and possibly a few storms, arrives next weekend.
