ICYMI Huntsville: Big-buck buildings, stop the rocks and a chat with the ‘Colonel’

Sundays can be days for catching up on things, including important local stories you may have missed in last week’s daily digital editions of The Huntsville Times. So to help you out, here are some of the stories our readers found most interesting last week.

Big-buck buildings: A storage facility in Huntsville, an alteration at Bridge Street, a Redstone Federal Credit Union office and renovation of a building for the Alabama Community College System. Each will cost more than $1 million, and all were building permits issued locally in just one week. Our Scott Turner’s regular look at new permits in the area is chock full of information.

Stop the rocks: Brad Vice and his wife live in Belle Mina, and they’re not sleeping these days? Why? They believe a rock quarry proposed very near their home will be dangerous for their baby daughter. Vice is just one of the local residents trying to block the proposed quarry which would be about a half-mile from this small Limestone County town. Scott Turner brings you their story and updates efforts both for and against the proposal.

Chat with the Colonel: So here’s a tough question … when you see those orange barrels on a local roadway, do you think ‘Hooray for progress’ or curse under your breath at the inconvenience? Love ‘em or hate ‘em, you’ll want to know where road projects are happening, and that’s just one of the questions that came up in Scott Turner’s recent chat with Huntsville’s city administrator. He might introduce himself as John Hamilton, but a lot of folks continue to call the former Redstone garrison commander ‘Colonel.’
