Katie Britt for vice president? Half of Alabama GOP voters say yes: Poll

Katie Britt first took office only a little more than a year ago, but speculation has been stirring about whether the freshman Republican senator for Alabama could complement Donald Trump at the top of the GOP ticket in 2024 as the party’s nominee for vice president.

While the Britt-for-vice-president speculation has come from pundits such as Newsmax TV’s Mark Halperin, and Britt has been asked about the possibility — which she laughed off during a November appearance on “CBS Mornings” –, on Friday the first large group of people has weighed in on the question: Alabama voters.

Half of likely Alabama Republican voters would approve of a Trump-Britt ticket, according to an Alabama Daily News/Gray Television poll released Friday and conducted on behalf of the outlets by Cygnal, reported Gray Television station WBRC in Birmingham.

A little less than a third of those polled disapproved of Britt as the party’s vice presidential nominee.

Britt could not be reached for comment on the poll or the speculation.

The poll also found Britt’s approval above water by a more than 4-to-1 margin.

About two-thirds of respondents said they approve of Britt’s job to just 15 percent who hold an unfavorable view of her Senate tenure.

“She’s a natural when it comes to messaging and personability, and I think that really comes through in these numbers,” Alabama Daily News Publisher and “Capitol Journal” host Todd Stacy said of Britt in WBRC’s story. “In just one year in the Senate, to have approval numbers and favorability numbers that high, and to have such low unfavorability numbers. It’s really impressive for a first year senator who just took office a year ago.”

Late last month, Halperin called Britt a “sleeper” pick for vice president.

“I am going all in on this. I just think, compared to the other alternatives, her upsides are huge, her downsides are very minimal and, above all else, she can go to the suburbs of Philadelphia, Atlanta, Milwaukee, and Phoenix and most of the other people being talked about [as potential Trump running mates] would have trouble doing that and she speaks fluent MAGA,” he said, according to Newsmax.

During an appearance on “CBS Mornings” in November to publicize her memoir, Britt sidestepped a question on whether she would like to be Trump’s running mate.

“Oh goodness, I am just working hard in the U.S. Senate …,” she said.
