45-year-old man indicted in deadly 2023 shooting at Hueytown home

A man has been indicted in the 2023 shooting death of another man at a Hueytown home.

A Jefferson County grand jury indicted 45-year-old Orlando Mayes on murder in the slaying of 34-year-old Dwyer Koharrell Fields, of Birmingham.

Court records show the indictment was issued in October, but Mayes was arrested this week and booked into the Jefferson County Jail.

The deadly shooting happened June 11, 2023.

Hueytown police and fire responded about 2:30 a.m. to a report of a person shot in the 100 block of Fair Street. When they arrived, they found Fields unresponsive in front of a residence.

Fields was pronounced dead on the scene at 3:09 a.m.

Mayes remained on the scene until police arrived.

Investigators said an altercation initially started with Fields and a woman at another location in Birmingham. Both parties drove separately to the residence in the 100 block of Fair Street.

At that location, an altercation occurred between the Fields and Mayes, a family member of the woman with whom Fields was initially arguing.

During that altercation, shots were fired, and Fields was struck.

No one was arrested at the time. Investigators took the case to a grand jury instead, which returned an indictment.

Mayes’ bond is set at $40,000. His first court appearance is in March.
