Winter’s not over yet, Alabama: Colder weather is on the way

Meteorological spring begins in 22 days, but there is still some winter to get through first.

And forecasters are suggesting that another cold snap may be coming.

Just how cold is anyone’s guess, but NOAA’s Climate Prediction Center is forecasting a decent probability of below-average temperatures, and they could start as soon as late next week if those forecasts verify.

But what are average temperatures for mid-February in Alabama, anyway?

According to data from the National Weather Service, highs are typically in the mid-50s to the mid-60s and lows in the mid-30s to mid-40s around the midpoint of the month.

Here are the average highs and lows for a few Alabama cities for Feb. 14 (next Wednesday):

Birmingham: High 59; low 38.

Dothan: High 66; low 43.

Huntsville: High 57; low 36.

Mobile: High 65; low 44.

Montgomery: High 65; low 40.

Muscle Shoals: High 56; low 37.

Tuscaloosa: High 60; low 39.

The Climate Prediction Center’s six- to 10-day temperature outlook shows a 40-50 percent probability of temperatures below those averages from Feb. 14-18. That includes all of Alabama. (See that forecast at the top of this post.)

The CPC’s eight- to 14-day outlook echoes that theme but takes it up a notch. The period from Feb. 16-22 includes a 50-60 percent probability of below-average temperatures for all of Alabama:

More below-average temperatures are favored for all of Alabama from Feb. 16-22.CPC

The Week 3-4 outlook also shows an increased probability of below-average temperatures for Alabama, with central and south Alabama having slightly higher probabilities:

Week 3-4 temps

Below-average temperatures will again be possible in Alabama from Feb. 17 through the end of the month.CPC

The good news is that the next few days will be on the warmer side. However, it will be rainy at times. Fortunately, no severe weather is expected in Alabama for the next seven days.
