Jason Isbell, Amanda Shires lawyers have repped huge starsâ divorces
In a legal complaint also serving as the coda for Americana music’s power couple, Jason Isbell listed “irreconcilable differences” as the grounds for his divorce from Amanda Shires.
In the complaint, filed Dec. 15, 2023, nearly two months ago, in Tennessee’s Williamson County Chancery Court, Isbell asks for joint custody of his 8-year-old daughter with Shires, Mercy Rose Isbell.
The document also references a prenuptial agreement from 2013, the year Isbell and Shire wed in a ceremony officiated by singer/songwriter Todd Snider.
While there’s nothing juicy or lurid in the complaint, the lawyers representing Isbell and Shires in their divorce proceedings are notable.
Isbell’s attorney is Rose Palermo. As noted in a 2009 Nashville Scene profile, Palermo’s handled divorces for country stars like Tracy Lawrence and Wynonna Judd, as well as Vince Gill’s ex-wife. The headline of that profile: “Headed for Splitsville? Just hope your spouse doesn’t hire Rose Palermo.”
More recently, Palermo repped reality TV personality Kristin Cavallari in her divorce from former NFL quarterback Jay Cutler, per TMZ. The website of Palermo’s lawyer firm touts her as “Nashville’s best-known divorce lawyer.”
Meanwhile, Shires’ attorneys are listed as Marlene Eskind Moses and Virginia Connell. Moses previously represented actor Reese Witherspoon in the “The Morning Show” and “Legally Blonde” star’s divorce from Jim Toth, a Hollywood talent agent who’s represented the likes of Robert Downey Jr., Jamie Foxx and Salma Hayek, according to a 2019 report by Deadline.
Neither Isbell, age 45, nor Shires, 41, has commented publicly on their split yet. This morning though, Isbell posted “12 years sober” on his Threads social media account. In a story that has been told many times, the formerly hard-living Isbell went to rehab before making the album that changed his career, “Southeastern,” released the same year he and Shires wed.
Early Thursday, People was the first outlet to report Isbell was filing for divorce from Shires. But there were signs they’d split. At this past weekend’s 2024 Grammy Awards, Isbell won the fifth and sixth Grammys of his career. Shires didn’t accompany him at the ceremony, and he didn’t thank her in his acceptance speeches. Shires, whose lone Grammy is from playing on Isbell’s Grammy-winning album “The Nashville Sound,” didn’t congratulate Isbell on her social media for his latest Grammys, either.
Isbell, an Alabama native who grew up in Muscle Shoals and Green Hill, was the subject of a 2023 HBO documentary called “Running With Our Eyes Closed.” In the doc, named after a song on Isbell’s 2020 album “Reunions,” pivotal scenes focus on a rough patch between Isbell and Shires, when creative clashes in the recording studio caused them marital strife, too.
Texas native Amanda Shires is known for her fiddle playing and songwriting. She’s played on many of Isbell’s albums, is a member of the country supergroup The Highwomen and has released solo albums of her own. Her most recent solo release was 2022′s critically lauded and now curiously titled, “Take It Like a Man.”
This weekend, two days before the Grammys, Isbell delivered a buzzed-about cover of “Wanted Dead or Alive” at an industry event celebrating rocker Jon Bon Jovi’s career and philanthropy.
Isbell’s 2024 Grammys were for Best Americana Album for his latest album “Weathervanes,” and Best American Roots Song for “Cast Iron Skillet,” a track off that 2023 disc.
Last year, he made a significant step into an acting career, with a sizable role alongside Leonardo DiCaprio in Martin Scorsese’s latest epic “Killers of the Flower Moon.”
But 2023 also saw a shakeup in Isbell’s longtime backing band The 400 Unit with the departure of bassist Jimbo Hart. A Muscle Shoals native, Hart contributed to seven of nine albums Isbell has released since Isbell parted ways with his former band, Drive-By Truckers. Those albums include “Weathervanes,” and Hart joined the band at last weekend’s Grammys ceremony to pick up their latest awards.
Isbell was previously married to bassist/singer Shonna Tucker, his then bandmate in Drive-By Truckers. This was Shires’ first marriage.
