Mobile and Baldwin counties under a high surf warning Sunday
On Saturday at 3:48 a.m. a high surf warning was issued by the National Weather Service valid for Sunday between midnight and 6 p.m. for Mobile and Baldwin counties.
“Dangerously large breaking waves of 7 to 9 feet expected in the surf zone,” describes the weather service. “High surf at these levels may result in flooding of low-lying and flood prone areas adjacent to the Gulf waters. Some of these vulnerable areas include the west end of Dauphin Island, Fort Pickens, and Highway 399 along the Gulf Islands National Seashore.”
“Breaking waves can sweep people off jetties and docks, and into dangerous seas. Life-threatening swimming conditions and significant beach erosion can be expected. Rip currents can sweep even the best swimmers away from shore into deeper water,” explains the weather service. “Everyone should remain out of the water due to life-threatening surf conditions. Stay off of jetties, piers, and other waterside infrastructure. If caught in a rip current, relax and float. Don’t swim against the current. If able, swim in a direction following the shoreline. If unable to escape, face the shore and call or wave for help.”
